The contrast of the clear blue-green water of the Gokase river flowing below the towering walls made of basalt creates an almost magical appeal. The easiest way to enjoy this breath-taking gorge is by walking along the cliff tops, towards the observatory near the waterfall or by hiring a boat for around JPY 2000 or INR 1300 which can accommodate up to 3 people.

 

3. Tottori Sand dunes

Did you know that Japan has a sandy landscape as well? The Tottori sand dunes are eighteen miles long coastal sand formations located in Tottori Prefecture. You can explore the dunes on foot and if that seems too strenuous you can hop onto the ski-lift-style cable cars which last for 5 minutes and cost just JPY 200 (Approximately Rs. 130).

 

4. Jigokudani

This volcanic crater shows the darker side of the natural landscape in Japan. Also, known as the hell valley, Jigokudani is famous for its sulphurous geysers and ponds of bubbling mud. Dip your feet in the steaming spring water at the Oyunumagawa Natural foot-bath, absolutely free.

 

5. Kerama Islands

These islands are definitely a scuba diver’s paradise. A few miles from the coast of the Okinawan mainland of Naha, these gorgeous islands are surrounded by pristine water, coral reefs and even humpback whales. Apart from enjoying the water sports, you can also hike to different viewpoints or explore the neighbouring uninhabited islands.
