One of Scotland’s most famous free attractions, Kelvingrove art gallery has an extensive and wide-ranging collection of approximately 8,000 objects. This museum is the perfect spot for our family tripper, as it has been designed while keeping children in mind. Also, all you art enthusiasts are in for a treat as one of the most famous paintings at the museum is the ‘Christ of St. John of the Cross’ by surrealist painter Salvador Dali! The best way to get here is by taking a bus from the city centre or the train to Charing Cross station.

Timings: All days 10.00 am to 5.00 pm except on it opens at 11.00 am on Friday & Sunday

 

2. The Hunterian

The oldest museum in the city, the Hunterian is located in the University of Glasgow. The museum is home to some of the most interesting objects in the world including the apparatus used by James Watt and Lord Kelvin, rare first contact artefacts from the Pacific ocean and exquisite European art! Entry to the art gallery and zoology museum is free, while the Mackintosh house charges a small fee of 550 INR.

Timings: Tuesday-Saturday from 10.00 am- 5.00 pm; Sundays- 11.00 am – 4.00 pm. Closed on Mondays.

 

3. The Necropolis (and Cathedral)

The Necropolis is Glasgow’s Victorian cemetery which has over 50,000 graves and 3,500 monuments located over 37 acres. It also has an exceptional view of the city and is located directly behind the Glasgow Cathedral which is another architectural marvel. You will not be able to take your eyes of the beautiful detailed stained glass windows. Currently, the entry to both is free and the closest train station to it is the High St. station. Fun fact: it is the only church in Scotland to have survived the Scottish Reformation without irreparable structural damage.

Timings: Hours for the Cathedral are Monday through Saturday 9:30 am to 5:30 pm; Sunday 1 pm to 5 pm. The Cathedral services are carried out till date and are still open to the public.

 

4. Gallery of Modern Art

Glasgow is every culture tripper’s dream destination! This world-class art museum is filled with curated modern and contemporary pieces- both local and international. Do check out the museum website beforehand for their ever-changing art programme. This is a place where people gather to learn, share ideas and revel in their mutual adoration for art.
