Foodie Tripper, Solo Tripper, Top5

A city like no other. This clean, gleaming glass metropolis might seem sanitised and boring but it is a land of cheap eats and unforgettable experience lie just below the skyline. Singapore is the perfect destination for a Solo Tripper. And, here are our Top 5 recommendations for the places you must visit:

1. Binge on street food in one of the many squeaky clean hawkers markets.

Even the most seasoned foodie will surely find something to challenge their taste buds on one of the many hawkers markets. (Try the Century eggs for one of Asia’s more acquired tastes.)

2. World’s cheapest Michelin Star.

Eat in a Michelin star restaurant? Sure you think, but why would I blow my whole trips budget on one meal? Hawker Chan served up delicious dishes for less than two dollars. But the line must be crazy right? You can be served, seated and eating in 10 minutes. You could wait longer for a Big Mac!

3. Sentosa Island.

Famed for its cable cars, chain restaurants and waterpark there is a much more educational side to this tourist hotspot. Be sure to take a tour of the fortifications that were not enough to defend ‘fortress Singapore’ from the advancing Japanese in WW2. A great way to squeeze in a valuable history lesson between big dippers and coconut ice cream!

4. Explore the domes and supertrees of the magnificent Gardens by the Bay.

This magical place is not exactly a hidden gem but it a testament to how Singapore blends its technological present with its natural origins. The huge water tanks and vast botanical greenhouses are lit up nightly in a hypnotic light show. Such things are often part of the tourist trail and often one to simply tick off the must-see list. Gardens by the Bay is much more than this and feels like you have stumbled onto the set of an avatar. Very cool Singapore, very cool.

5. Take your favourite book and head to one of the many peaceful spots in the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Every city has one, but not all are teeming with wildlife. The garden is vast and beautifully maintained. Don’t stray too far from the path though. You may bump into a monitor lizard, a hungry otter or even a snake. The ponds are also teeming with life and you are sure to see a turtle or twenty. A tour of the Orchid Garden is worth the small fee and if you’re lucky a free classical concert will accompany you around.

Bonus: Little India

Okay, so many non-Indians love India so much because it is a mass of colour, smog, traffic, people, smells and general chaos. Little India is not like this. It’s what India would be like if Germany had ruled the Raj. Very clean and very ordered. You really can’t keep a good cuisine down though and a stop off for some idli / dosa is a great start to the day.
